AFTERCARE

INSTRUCTIONS

How to care for your permanent makeup or cosmetic tattoo procedure during healing.

General Aftercare Instructions for Brows, Eyeliner, and other Cosmetic Tattoos:

  • Do not touch the area unless to apply ointment with clean, washed hands.

  • Do not get treatment area saturated wet for 48 hours (i.e. avoid showers/baths).  After 48 hours baths are best to reduce the chance of having water/soap/shampoo enter the area unintentionally.

  • Please keep all remaining aftercare products to be used after your second appointment - there will be excess.

  • Change to clean bedding and pillowcases.

  • Avoid swimming pools, ocean water, lake water, and hot tubs for minimum 3 weeks – these are excellent harbors of bacteria and are a source of infections.

  • Avoid saunas and hot showers.

  • Avoid makeup, Retin-A, glycolic acids, exfoliators, peels, sunscreens, and self-tanners on area while healing.

  • Limit exposure to direct sun and tanning beds while healing. Once healed, always apply sunscreen to protect the colour and life of the tattoo.

  • Avoid dirt and extreme perspiration for the first week to prevent possible infection (e.g. gardening, home renovations, exercise).

  • If slight crust appears on pigmented area, do not pick, scratch or scrub. Procedures are not considered healed until all crusting has exfoliated itself naturally and skin colour has return to normal.

  • Do not be alarmed if pigment/crust comes off onto Q-tip when applying aftercare ointments or on pillow after sleeping.

  • Do not be alarmed by fading after initial procedure. Final results and colour cannot be fully seen until 4-6 weeks post procedure. Your secondary appointment will allow for modifications or changes to your tattoo, if needed.

  • Never use topical antibiotics (e.g. Polysporin) unless given to you by a Doctor’s recommendation.

  • Cosmetic procedures such as chemical peels and strong anti-aging products should not be used near the area of the healed cosmetic tattoo. Avoid tattooed area by 2.5 cm or 1 inch. Colour loss or changes can occur.

  • Laser hair removal, IPL or photo facials near or on cosmetic tattoo can cause unwanted colour changes. Discuss with your laser specialist prior to having a procedure done.

  • If you donate blood, it’s a Canadian Blood Services donor policy to wait 3 months after any tattooing procedure.

Eyebrow Specific Aftercare:

Healing time: 7-14 days

Full Results: 4-6 weeks

  • Absolutely no topical cosmetics near the brows until full crust has formed (powders and shadows can enter the wound and heal, causing discolouration).

  • Prevent large amounts of water from touching the brow area for a minimum of 48 hours (i.e. do not let shower spray you in the face).

  • After 48 hours you can shower but just avoid getting the shower spray in your face. You can wash your face at the sink while avoiding brow area.

  • Do not pick any crust, you can lose colour and/or cause scarring

  • Eyebrow healing is a long process, around 4 -6 weeks - your brows will look different throughout this process.

  • Avoid brow tints until after secondary appointment.

  • Brows will lighten and shrink slightly during the healing process.

  • Wash your face as normal but avoid the brow area until healed.

Daily Care until Healed (~0-10 days)

  • Your brows have been coated in a liquid band-aid to allow the colour to be locked in and potential germs to be locked out. The band-aid will stay on for 2-3 days after your appointment.

  • After the 2-3 days you can wash your brows gently before bed using the provided wash/soap. This is Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser, but any gentle soap will work. Blot dry with a clean tissue or cotton pad.

  • With clean hands, apply a rice sized amount of aftercare lotion/ointment to the brows. This can be reapplied throughout the day 2-4 times for about 7 days or until healed and all crust has naturally shed.

  • Keep area moist but not wet with the ointment/lotion.

  • Don't be alarmed if pigment/crust comes off onto or finger when applying aftercare or on pillow after sleeping.

  • Keep the remaining aftercare products to use after your secondary appointment.

Eyeliner Specific Aftercare:

Healing time: 7-10 days

Full Results: 4-6 weeks

  • Absolutely no topical cosmetics near the brows until full crust has formed (powders and shadows can enter the wound and heal, causing discolouration).

  • Prevent large amounts of water from touching the eye area for a minimum of 48 hours (i.e. do not let shower spray you in the face).

  • After 48 hours you can shower but just avoid getting the shower spray in your face. You can wash your face at the sink while avoiding eye area.

  • Do not pick any crust or rub eyes, you can lose colour and/or cause scarring

  • Do not wear contact lens until crust has fully shed.

  • Avoid eye specific creams until crust has fully shed. Many of these products contain strong anti aging ingredients that can irritate healing skin.

  • Lash extensions, false lashes, lash tints, and lash perms can be reapplied AFTER your secondary appointment (if applicable) healing period.

  • Avoid lash growth serums until after secondary appointment.

  • Eyeliner will lighten and shrink slightly during the healing process.

  • Wash your face as normal but avoid the eye area until healed.

Daily Care until Healed (~0-7 days)

  • Eyeliner is a small healing area and is left to heal on its own without products.

  • After showering you can gently blot dry eyes with a clean tissue or cotton pad.

  • During the crust stage of healing you can, with clean hands, gently loosen crust that is fully attached to the lashes and no long touching the skin.

  • Don't be alarmed if pigment/crust comes off onto pillow after sleeping.
